Elon Musk Confirms Robotaxis Headed for Austin Soon, CNBC Reports

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Autonomous vehicles are set to become even more common on Austin’s roads shortly, following confirmation from Tesla CEO Elon Musk that the company plans to introduce robotaxis in Austin by the end of June. based on a CNBC report .
Austinites are fairly familiar with seeing Waymo autonomous vehicles driving around city streets in Austin. Waymo has about 1,500 vehicles on the road in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Austin.
The statement from Musk follows this The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had inquiries for Tesla. Last week regarding its plans to introduce self-driving cars in Austin.
In October 2024, Tesla debuted its robotaxi at the Warner Bros. studio in Hollywood, with Musk arriving at the stage in the company’s "Cybercab." The Associated Press reported .
In December 2024, KXAN provided coverage of the event. Tesla started talking about the autonomous vehicle technology with the transportation officials from Austin’s public works department.
"The City provides equal treatment to every autonomous vehicle company showing interest in Austin, offering them identical training opportunities and supplying consistent information," stated the transportation spokesperson in an email to KXAN at the time.
Musk stated that those Cybercabs will be priced below $30,000, as reported by the AP.
