Xiaomi Commits $6.9 Billion to Launch In-House Chip Development
The Chinese technology conglomerate Xiaomi revealed its latest developments. dedication to investing a minimum of 50 billion yuan (\$6.9 billion) over the coming ten years to create its proprietary semiconductors, a step designed to strengthen its self-reliance in technology during escalating trade disagreements between the U.S. and China. In a Weibo posting on Monday, CEO Lei Jun revealed this plan, underscoring the firm’s commitment to investing more in domestically produced tech solutions.
Investment Timeline and Details
The $6.43 billion investment announced by Xiaomi is set to commence in 2025. Additionally, Lei hinted at an approaching announcement scheduled for this Thursday, during which the firm intends to present their latest system-on-chip called the Xring O1. This component will be utilized as the driving force behind Xiaomi’s subsequent mobile device.
The Xring O1 will utilize a 3-nanometer fabrication process, among the leading technologies available today. To put this into perspective, Apple’s A18 Pro chips featured in theiPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models also employ this very same production technique. Essentially, a system-on-chip (SoC) combines all necessary elements needed for operating a gadget like a smartphone within a single chip.
Qualcomm has been supplying most of the system-on-chips (SoCs) for Xiaomi’s high-end phones via their Snapdragon processors. Nonetheless, Xiaomi’s recent initiative to create its own chipsets marks a significant change in its technology advancement strategy.
Thursday sees the anticipated release from Xiaomi of a fresh smartphone along with a tablet and an electric vehicle. The lineup for these newly unveiled products may incorporate the innovative Xring O1 chipset, although this detail has yet to be confirmed.
Xiaomi’s Bid to Rival Top Players in the Industry
Despite this shift, Qualcomm’s CEO, Cristiano Amon, reassured that Xiaomi’s decision would not affect its business. “We remain a strategic supplier of chips for Xiaomi, and most importantly, Qualcomm Snapdragon chips will continue to be used in Xiaomi’s flagships,” Amon said.
Venturing into developing their own System-on-Chips (SoCs) is an uncommon step for smartphone manufacturers because of the intricacy and expense involved. Only a few players such as Apple, Samsung, and Huawei have taken this route, whereas many others depend on chip providers like Qualcomm and MediaTek.
The advantage of self-designed chips lies in the ability to create a more integrated hardware and software experience, differentiating products from competitors. The Xring O1 marks Xiaomi’s return to designing a key smartphone component, after previously releasing the Surge S1 in 2017. Despite setbacks, Xiaomi is aiming to make a significant impact in chip development once again.
