Your Volvo's Getting a Gemini Upgrade as Google Assistant Takes a Final Bow

At this week's Google I/O event, the focus is entirely on Gemini. The aim is to integrate Gemini into various aspects of our lives, including within vehicles. Specifically, Gemini will be featured in Google-built cars. Currently, they're demonstrating these capabilities using a brand-new Volvo model; however, Gemini isn’t scheduled for release until sometime later this year. As shown in the following video, the software remains somewhat glitchy. Keep in mind that during events like Google I/O, there tends to be significant WiFi interference—more so than what one typically encounters while driving.
The primary distinction lies in engaging naturally with Gemini. When using Google Assistant, you typically issue precise instructions that you're confident it will understand, such as "What’s the weather like?" In contrast, when interacting with Gemini, you have the flexibility to engage in lengthier conversations and provide more detailed prompts to elicit responses. This is demonstrated further in the video provided below.
What's fresh goes beyond Gemini; Games and TV are making their debut as well.
Previously, you had the option to play games and catch some shows on television within the car. Now, these experiences have been enhanced. You can now enjoy watching Fubo while seated near a charging point as your electric vehicle gets powered up. Alternatively, this entertainment feature comes in handy during wait times at school pick-up zones. However, rest assured that Google won’t allow videos to be played back while operating the vehicle; safety always takes precedence.
Google mentioned to me their plans for handling video podcasts: enabling the video to move to the background once you begin driving. In this manner, you can continue listening to your podcast without being sidetracked by the visual content. They've indicated that parents requested this function, as it allows them to play children’s shows during drives while keeping the audio accessible to their kids. Although I imagine most kids would prefer watching rather than merely hearing these shows.
Here’s what’s headed for Volvo, particularly towards the end of this year. Keep in mind that with the Android Automotive OS, Google provides app licenses such as Google Maps and Gemini, among others, whereas the automaker develops the operating system itself. That explains why the interface appears distinct between Volvos and Polestars compared to newer GM vehicles. Although the Hummer EV uses the same underlying technology, its appearance differs significantly. Think of it similarly to how One UI and PixelExperience vary across smartphones.
