May 20 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump revealed information on Tuesday regarding his "$175 billion Golden Dome" missile defense system, which he anticipates will become fully functional before the conclusion of his presidency.

"It will take approximately three years to complete. Upon full construction, the Golden Dome will be able to intercept missiles regardless of whether they are launched from opposite ends of the globe or even from outer space," Trump told reporters at the Oval Office, stating that Canada will be included in the project .

“Canada has reached out to us and they wish to join,” Trump stated. “We will be discussing this with them. They are seeking protection as well.”

Trump's "Golden Dome" missile defense shield, which the president says will be made entirely in the United States, comes decades after former President Ronald Reagan's "Star Wars" vision failed to materialize. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Tuesday the technology is possible now.

Details regarding the dimensions and extent of the "Golden Dome" initiative, as well as whether it will encompass every region of the U.S., remained undisclosed on Tuesday. General Michael Guetlein, who serves as the Vice Chief of Space Operations at the Pentagon, has been assigned to head this effort.

The Department of Defense has assembled some of the most brilliant individuals and top technical experts around," stated Sean Parnell, who serves as the principal spokesperson at the Pentagon. These experts will "examine an extensive array of possibilities that take into account both present U.S. missile defense technologies and pioneering advancements with the aim of swiftly developing and deploying a reliable shield of protection for our nation’s territory.
