Waymo Gains Approval to Expand Robotaxi Service Across More of Silicon Valley

The California Public Utilities Commission has granted approval to Waymo's petition to broaden the scope of its commercial autonomous taxi services. This decision paves the way for Alphabet-owned Waymo to introduce its driverless ridesharing cars to additional areas located below San Francisco.

The firm posted on X about the approval. won’t change its plans In the short term, Waymo currently runs a commercial self-driving taxi service across all of San Francisco along with portions of the Peninsula. Additionally, they offer driverless trips to fare-paying passengers in various Silicon Valley towns such as sections of Mountain View, Palo Alto, Los Altos, and Sunnyvale. Collectively, their operational zone spans approximately 85 square miles encompassing both San Francisco and Silicon Valley regions.

The firm is also striving to unlock access to the San Francisco International Airport , although those plans are on a much longer timeline. Waymo was given permission in March to map roadways at SFO via a temporary permit. Waymo vehicles will not operate autonomously in the airport; employees will manually drive the vehicles to map the area. But the permit signals the beginning of a phased approach to Waymo eventually operating commercially there.

Waymo offers 250,000 compensated rides weekly throughout its services, reaching beyond Los Angeles , Phoenix , and more recently Austin .
